The first session of the Corak Malaysia Webinar Series (Series 1/2024) took place recently, offering an insightful look into the rich world of Malaysian motifs and their modern applications. The webinar featured two exciting sessions with speakers who brought their expertise in motif design and cultural heritage to the forefront.

Session 1 (10:00 AM – 11:00 AM)

The session kicked off with a presentation by Nik Faiz Nik Amin titled “Fostering Collaboration Through New Motif Designs.” He discussed the importance of collaboration in creating new motifs, highlighting how partnerships between designers and artisans can breathe new life into traditional patterns.

Following this, Jennifer P. Linggi spoke on “Interweaving Traditional Motifs into Modern Artisanal Crafts.” She explored how traditional motifs like kelarai can be integrated into modern artisanal crafts, demonstrating the continued relevance of these designs in contemporary art and craft.

Session 2 (11:00 AM – 12:00 PM)

In the second session, Nik Faiz Nik Amin returned with a talk on “Ketam Guri: Motif as Brand Identity.” He shared insights on how the Ketam Guri motif has been transformed into a powerful brand identity, showcasing the potential of motifs as more than just decorative elements but as symbols of cultural identity.

Closing the event, Yunizam Yahaya presented “Intriguing Narratives Behind Selected Malaysia’s Motifs.” He delved into the stories and cultural significance behind some of Malaysia’s most iconic motifs, offering a deeper understanding of their historical and cultural contexts.
